Don't miss the sunset!

This post is about a particular scene in a movie which had quite an impact on me.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. A movie that most of us would have watched, and  a pretty phenomenal one too. It's a story of a nerdy young medical student who sets out to discover what she's been missing, and a carefree young guy whose dream is to travel the world and leave no continent unseen. She lives her life in confined borders, with just an eager peek at the outside sometimes. But he sets the sky as his limit, and doesn't want any element of his life to hold him back from reaching that far. And of course, just like in any other Bollywood movie, these two opposite poles fall in love. There's a particular scene in this movie that I think of every now and then, and it has a bigger impact than you'd imagine on the decisions than I make. Ranbir and Deepika are sitting in the midst of nature's beauty in Udaipur, looking at the setting sun as they talk their minds to one another. As always, Ranbir is in a hurry to get places and strike off more elements in his list of tourist spots. But Deepika wants to stay. He tries to get her to make a move, saying that if they stay still, they'll miss out on all the awesome places they could have been at. Deepika says, "Well if we go, we'll miss out on this awesome sunset," and that's enough to make him stay. You're so often in a rush to get somewhere so you don't miss something, you don't even think what you might be leaving behind to go and get that. Every experience is an experience; there's no better or worse, just what you prefer.

A person who chooses to travel his entire life may get to see all the renowned places of the world that he plans to, but one who stays in his native place forever would have the pride of being associated with a single place for a long time, watching how it changes and playing a significant role in its development. There's diversity everywhere; you don't need always to look far and wide for it. A quiet evening at home, with a good book, or another way to have some time to yourself is a great alternative to an apparent adventure with your friends. Excelling in academics has you lost in other fields that you might not even know exist, and if you're lucky, you'll never have to know what you've missed. But if you aren't, no matter how hard you'd have worked your entire life, no matter in which direction, you'll have regrets. So there's no point in stressing yourself too much to do things that aren't comfortable for you; even if you don't, you'll still be a winner.
