The impact of media

Even in this day and age, mass media is one of our primary windows to the world outside. The two biggest forms of media - namely, print and electronic - have revolutionized our world and made a huge impact on it.

Print media has been in existence for a long time. The first newspaper in the world, The Relation, was published in Germany in the year 1605 and was the forerunner of the large impact that media would have on the public in the coming years. People were becoming increasingly curious to know about the day-to-day happenings around them and the newspaper was made for serving that purpose. Even now, 400 years after its birth, newspapers have certainly held their place strong amidst a variety of other forms of media as a primary source of information on the events of the day. It is important to note that they have adapted to the newer modes of communication as well. Most of the leading newspapers nowadays have websites and social media accounts as well to complement their print versions.

The electronic media boom occurred quite recently as television sets became common in houses around the world. Initially restricted to just one channel, electronic media has now become a large industry of its own accord. The number of news channels is increasing by the day, with each one trying to be more popular than the other, and the viewer is spoilt for choice as to which news channel he should tune into. In most of our homes, it is now a standard dinner-time ritual to watch one of the heated debates being played on the news channels!

Media impacts our lives in a big way. A lot of our opinions and views on several affairs, both local and international, are shaped by the way the media projects them to us. These days, due to the mass reach of media, even people living in far-flung areas are well acquainted with the current affairs and incidents happening in the world.

In the last few years, social media has become highly popular and has challenged the monopoly of conventional news reporters as the primary means of communication. As the common man is the sender as well as the receiver in social media, this has erased the barriers in communication and often contributed to the unbiased spread of information. Several political uprisings and movements in recent times have been made possible because of the mass usage of Facebook and Twitter. Governments all over the world are tending to become more accountable as a result of the rise of social media. Social media has thus made a big impact in the last few years and its influence can only be expected to rise in the coming decade.

Thus, media is a powerful tool with an incredible impact on the modern society. If used properly, it can lead to many positive changes in our world.
