This is one TV show that nearly every medical student watches. Not just us, this fantastico show has become a hit among everyone for its sheer genius, intriguing storyline and tongue-in-cheek humor! I'm talking about House MD. It revolves around a doctor named Gregory House who is the head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine in the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital.
Everything about this show, right from the authenticity of the clinical cases to the sarcastic dialogues, is simply fantastico. It is amazing to watch the cold, logical and calculated manner in which Dr. House reasons to come to a diagnosis and then proceeds to treat his patient, devoid of all pre-inhibitions and bias. One can even learn a thing or two from it. We also get a peek into the lives of doctors and the problems they face in their own lives. Time is taken to slowly introduce each character, though sustaining our interest with subtle hints at their personality quirks. There's no character you don't feel for at the end of the show! The world expects perfection from doctors, for curing the diseases of the people. But there is more to medicine than following a predefined protocol, and House MD gives us a peek at that. Sometimes rules must be bent, even broken to get the best of results.
The show makes you believe in the notion that sheer practicality and reason works at all times, even in extreme situations where one's life at stake; in fact, it is in these situations where such reasoning is of the utmost necessity. We are often bounded by our emotional restraint and fail to do what logic demands for a higher probability of success. The most fantastico thing about the show is the way it's portrayed to the viewers. I can confidently say that watching the show has made me more devoid of feelings in situations that demand cold, emotionless reasoning, and that is simply fantastico. What more can you ask for from a book or a TV show than its influence in your life?
It is impossible to miss that the creators of the show have designed the character of Dr House to be very similar to Sherlock Holmes - it's almost like a tribute to him. It assumes more significance considering the fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been quoted as saying that he had created the character of Sherlock Holmes after being inspired by a real-life doctor. The concurrence between the two is unmistakable - the name itself bears resemblance to “Homes” and the address is the same, 221B. The way in which Dr House performs his reasoning and comes to a diagnosis is also very similar to that of Holmes solving his cases.
House MD is definitely one of the most fantastico TV shows of all time!
